Shaka Divers Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
1. How much does it cost to dive with SHAKA DIVERS?
Answer: Please refer to our current price list at the bottom of this page since there are many types of dives available. Our prices start at only $59 for a one tank dive and we have many other exciting options available. Snorkel tours begin at only $30!

2. Do you need to be "Certified" to dive with SHAKA DIVERS?

Answer: No! You can try an Introductory Dive (1-2-3-4-Dive Program) for only $89. It only takes about half a day and it's great fun. A second dive can be made on the same day for only $20 more!

3. Does SHAKA DIVERS go to Molokini?

Answer: Not until they build the bridge! We don't usually go there because EVERYONE ELSE DOES. Once in a while we'll do an Advanced Open Water training day off the boats out there.

4. Where is SHAKA DIVERS located?

Answer: We are in Kihei, on Maui's South Shore. Our address is 24 Hakoi Place, Kihei, Maui, HI 96753, Phone (808) 250-1234 but you won't need to come see us, we have the islands most complete mobile dive service so we'll bring the dive to you!

5. How many years has "SHAKA~DOUG" been in the business of SCUBA Diving?

Answer: Over 21 years with over 2,900 logged dives on the island of Maui and over 4,500 dives in the Caribbean.

6. How long has SHAKA DIVERS had the "SCUBABUS"?

Answer: Since 1998. It was a run-down, handicapped children's School Bus headed for the junk yard when "Shaka~Doug" found it and converted it into the worlds greatest dive mobile. It's still under construction and we're always looking for new ideas of things to add or change.

7. How long are the dives at SHAKA DIVERS?

Answer: Typically 45 to 60 minutes per dive. Longer than most other dive operators allow. You'll be able to use most of your tank on our dives. We believe you pay good money for SCUBA Tours so we want you to get your money's worth with us.

8. Do you provide wetsuits? Is the water cold in Maui?

Answer: SHAKA DIVERS will supply you with a full body 3mm wetsuit and booties when you dive with us. You'll need the suit to stay warm, even in our water which averages 77 degrees (70-72 in winter, 80-82 in late summer) and you'll also be able to prevent most coral scrapes and abrasions. By the way, the suits make you look good too!

9. Can I get pictures or video of my SCUBA Dives with SHAKA DIVERS?

Answer: Absolutely! We have underwater photos and videos available on every dive. A digital slideshow on CD of 25 (or more) pictures is only $40 and our custom made video is only $125. Combine the two for an even $150. We'll make you look good down there and set you up with plenty of great shots. People give us lots of great feedback from our photos and videos.

10. What times do the dives go at?

Answer: Later than most of our competitors so you won't have to wake up at the crack of dawn on your vacation. Monday through Friday we start at 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM; Saturday, Sunday and Holidays we start at 11:00 AM or 2:00 PM. Night Dives are typically around an hour before sunset (approximately 6:00 PM in summer, 4:30 PM in winter).

11. Does SHAKA DIVERS accept credit cards?

Answer: Of course we do! We'll take payment in many forms. Although "CA$H is KING", we'll also gladly accept Travelers Checks, VISA, Mastercard or American Express.

12. How many people are allowed on the dives?

Answer: That depends on the type of dive we're doing, For beginner or non-certified dives, we set a maximum limit of 6 divers per Instructor. For Certified Divers we try to limit the group to 8 divers per Divemaster/Instructor. Usually our groups are around 2 to 6 divers plus the guide. We are NOT a Cattle Boat Operation!!!

13. Can I Spearfish during the dives?

Answer: Spearfishing is discouraged on our normal excursions. We'd rather have you shoot the fish with a camera than a gun. For the few Underwater Hunters out there that would like to poke a fish, we can probably help set up something custom for you. Just give us a call for details. (808) 250-1234

14. Does SHAKA DIVERS provide transportation to and from the dive sites?

Answer: Sorry, we do not typically transport you to the sites. Most of our guests have rental cars here on Maui and prefer to have their own wheels handy to do what they want after the dives are over. If you need transportation, please contact us ahead of time and we'll see if we can help you out with a "Shaka~Shuttle". (808) 250-1234

15. Are there any discounts available?

Answer: The best way to get a discount is to purchase a Gold Card from the Activities and Attractions Association of Hawaii ("A3H"). This will save you 20% at SHAKA DIVERS and will get you lots of other discounts at other merchants throughout Maui as well. Here is a link to "A3H": www.mauifun.org

16. How do I make Reservations for dives with SHAKA DIVERS?

Answer: It's easy to reserve a time for your dives. Simply call (808) 250-1234 or send an e-mail to "Reservations" and we'll let you know about our availability.

17. Can Non-Certified Divers dive with Certified Divers on the same dive?

Answer: You bet! We have lots of guests that have mixed diving ability / skill levels. Our personalized tours give us the flexibility to keep your family or group together on the same dive and everyone will enjoy it. Believe it or not, the Non-Certified Divers almost always beat the Certified Divers on air! It happens over and over again!

18. If I make an Intro-Dive one day and want to dive again another day, do I have to take the class again?

Answer: Nope! You can make as many dives as you like with us once you've completed our "1-2-3-4-Dive Program". Many of our guests don't have the time to complete a certification course during their vacation. They just want to get wet, not read books and take tests. We allow you to dive your butt off if you'd like. For the additional dives, you'll pay the same as a certified diver. The only limit is on depth...we won't be able to take you past 40 feet deep. (That's no big deal though, since most of the good stuff is in 40 feet or less anyway.) You can go back to the mainland with a bunch of dives under your belt, take a SCUBA Class at your local shop and then when you come back you can finish up through the Referral Dive Program. It's a great way to learn how to dive.

19. How long will it take to get certified at SHAKA DIVERS and how much does it cost?

Answer: Our PADI or SDI sanctioned class typically takes up to 4 days to complete. We don't rush you or cut corners. If you need to cut corners on your SCUBA Class you should rethink what you're doing to begin with. This isn't tiddly-winks were talking about here! Our fee is $375 PP plus tax and includes all your books and registration materials, a complimentary six-month subscription to Dive Training Magazine, complete SCUBA Equipment, and personalized instruction.

20. Are there "Dive Packages" available?

Answer: We can tailor a couple days of diving for you that can include one, two, three or more dives per day for as many days as you'd like. We can put together a day where you start out in the morning and finish with a night dive. How about a refresher dive for the rusty diver and then the next day you're out on our Torpedo Scooters? If you're really interested in Packages, let us know what you think you want and we can work out a deal for you. (808) 250-1234
